KlLN INSTRUCTIONS

Before you can use the kilns at TPS you must first be a member in good standing. These instructions were created for you to understand the usage of the kilns in the 3D studio.  You will need to use this form link below to accept that you have read and understand the kiln usage.

KILNS ARE AVAILABLE FOR MEMBERS ONLY INCLUDING: CLAY CLASS STUDENTS, PARTICIPANTS IN 3D OPEN STUDIO USAGE, AND MEMBERS WHO CREATE IN THEIR OWN STUDIOS BUT NEED TO FIRE AT TPS.

 

DEDICATED KILN COORDINATOR AND BOARD MEMBER CONTACT:

A dedicated kiln coordinator is available to help with scheduling, answer questions, and ensure the kiln area is running smoothly. Please contact the coordinator for all kiln rental bookings and to confirm your firing times. The coordinator can also assist with troubleshooting and provide guidance on best practices for kiln use.

IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR FIRST-TIME USERS

If you have never fired a kiln with us before, you are expected to have prior knowledge of how to properly load and unload a kiln and be able to keep a log of firing details.

Learning Resources:

  • First, schedule an appointment with Amy for hands-on guidance.

  • Check notebook in 3D studio for instructions.

  • It’s important to become familiar with the operation of the kiln setter and safety .

  • We have an LL kiln with an easy fire kiln setter. For further information you can look at their website:  www.hotkiln.com

 

FULL KILN PRICING: ELECTRIC KILNS

Welcome! If you are interested in renting our electric kilns, please review the following information carefully to ensure a smooth and successful firing experience.

KILN AVAILABILITY

The kiln is available for rental during gallery hours:
Wednesday to Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Schedule firings so completion is timed to end during business hours.
IMPORTANT: Kiln firing costs can be split between members.

KILN OPTIONS AND PRICING

LARGE – 10 Cubic Ft. Olympic Kiln with a Bartlett-V6CF kiln sitter

  • Bisque Firing (Cone 04): $45

  • Glaze Firing: (Cone 6) $65

 

MEDIUM – 7 Cubic Ft. L&L Kiln with kiln sitter / LL Kiln Genesis kiln sitter.

  • Bisque Firing (Cone 04): $35

  • Glaze Firing: $50

 

RESPONSIBILITIES OF KILN USERS

  • Keep the kiln area clear and orderly at all times.

  • Maintain accurate records of all firings. The document can be found in the kiln notebook .

  • Clean kiln shelves after each use.

  • Scrape shelves and reapply kiln wash as needed.

  • Take your finished work home promptly.

  • Use only cone 5/6 clay and glazes.

  • Ensure a signed rental contract is on file before your first firing.

 

ADDITIONAL FEES

Damage to kiln shelves caused by glaze or clay will be billed at the cost of a new shelf.
Damage to kilns due to misuse will be billed at the cost of a new kiln if warranted.
